Why we are here

The Centre for Retirement Reform (CRR) has been set up to create a focal point for the increasingly widespread view that the UK needs a far more radical approach to addressing its growing retirement crisis. The last 25 years of reform have been characterised by well-meaning tinkering around the edges, whilst more fundamental ills have continued to fester with chilling consequences for future retirees and the country as a whole.

The UK is not short of organisations providing input to policy makers on the so called “pensions crisis”. However, the CRR’s Board believes that a new collective voice is required. One that is wider in its thinking, politically and commercially independent and driven only by the interests of the British people. Crucially, this new force for improvement must be more ambitious, challenging and determined in its approach if the scale of reform required is to be achieved.

The three key reform objectives are:

  1. To facilitate positive public attitudes to longer working lives, flexible retirement concepts and saving for retirement.
  2. To support the implementation of a policy framework for a flexible retirement which is simple, fair, affordable and meaningful.
  3. A new long term savings product structure must be developed to replace the current private pension model as it is no longer fit for purpose.

Each of these will be explored in practical detail with research, feasibility studies and documented proposals being produced and utilised to campaign vigorously for the more fundamental reform they justify and support.

Beyond these objectives, the CRR will broaden its scope to reflect a holistic approach to retirement reform. This will take in the crucial challenges created by longevity improvements and an ageing society; the older workforce, healthy ageing and long term care.
